Japan's nuclear disaster will be top of the agenda at the annual conference of Nuclear Free Local Authorities at the end of this month, reports the Yorkshire Post (p8).

The conference programme has been adjusted to include discussion of the Tokai-mura nuclear plant accident.

Ken Wyatt, a Rotherham MBC councillor and one of the conference organisers, said: 'One of the conference speakers was in Japan at the time and he will be able to give delegates a unique insight into the disaster.'

The conference will be addressed by nuclear experts along with variouis MPs including Martin O'Neill, chairman of the parliamentary trade and industry committee.

Cllr Wyatt added: 'This conference is taking place at a very important stage in the nuclear debate. At national level there will be an ongoing major consultation on future radioactive waste policy. It is crucial that local government contributes to that debate.'

The three-day conference, with delegates drawn from more than 100 councils which support the non-political organisation, runs from 27 to 29 October.
