Nearly 3,000 Birkenhead residents are suing a mineral manufacturer over dust from its factory which they claim is ruining their health, The Guardian (p12) reports.

The suit against Volclay Ltd is one of the largest ever joint legal actions and if successful, damages awarded will run into millions of pounds. Some individual claims are as much as£250,000.

The environmental law firm Roland Jones and partners said that people living within 1km of the factory say they have been affected by nasal problems, asthma, and skin complaints like eczema.

Nina Rowland of the law firm claimed they have expert evidence to prove that the dust emited from the factory contains chromium, an irritant and carcinogen.

A Volclay spokesman said, 'We are confident we are not the source of pollution in the area.'
