The Local Government Association and NHS Confederation have written an open letter to MPs to ask for more cash for social services.

LGA chair Sir Jeremy Beecham and NHS Confederation chair Dianne Jeffrey hope the letter will encourage the government to make extra cash available in the budget and comprehensive spending review.

It said: 'Investment needs to be both increased and sustained through additional investment in the budget and a sustained approach in the current spending review.'

The letter said social services investment has not kept up with NHS investment, which has exacerbated problems for local government and the NHS.
