Confederation of British Industry director general Digby Jones has claimed there is no such thing as a public service ethos.

In a speech to the Social Market Foundation, Mr Jones said: 'There has been too much waffle about the concept of public service ethos.

'I find it amazing some ministers promote the idea public sector staff automatically have this attitude, and staff in the private sector do not.'

Mr Jones' robust attack on the public sector echoes recent comments made by prime minister Tony Blair, who said some public servants are against change (LGC, 27 June).
