Sir George Young has moved from the DoE, where he was housing minister, to become financial secretary to the Treasury in the latest government reshuffle (Financial Times, p8). Viscount Ullswater, formerly chief whip in the Lords, replaces Sir George as junior environment minister.
Other changes include Gillian Shephard replacing John Patten as education secretary and Dr Brain Mawhinney replacing John MacGregor as transport secretary.
Sir Wyn Roberts has stepped down as Welsh Office minister to be replaced by Roderick Richards in a downgraded post of undersecretary. Eric Forth is now education minister, replacing Baroness Blatch.
There are two new undersecretaries at the DoE - Robert Jones, formerly chairman of the Commons Environment Select Committee, and Sir Paul Beresford, former leader of Wandsworth LBC - and two losses - Tony Baldry, who moves to the Foreign Office, and Lord Strathclyde, who replaces Viscount Ullswater as leader of the Lords.
