Alan Meale, the junior environment minister, yesterday revealed he was involved in making representations on behalf of a second planning application in north London - 140 miles from his Mansfield constituency.

The Financial Times (p9) reports that the latest admission from Mr Meale, concerning a riding school, will raise futher questions about his judgment in taking up planning cases in which he had no constituency interest.

The department of the environment, transport and the regions said Mr Meale was happy to refer both matters to Gordon Downey, the parliamentary standards commissioner.

It said that Mr Meale had got involved in the matter because of a 'long-standing interest in equestrian matters'.
