Kent CC has welcomed Conservative proposals for detention centres for asylum seekers, saying this would help keep track of asylum seekers, BBC Radio Four's Today programme heard this morning.

Keith Ferrin, deputy leader of the county council, said asylum seekers who are not locked up are staying in the country even if their cliams for asylum are rejected.

'By the time you get to the hearing you can probably have disappeared,' he told Today. 'If the hearing finds against you, you can probably still disappear and actually there's a huge premium on coming and taking your chance because a lot of people who aren't granted leave to stay do stay anyway.'
