Peter Kilfoyle, the former defence minister, has hinted that he might yet be willing to campaign for the role of elected mayor of Liverpool, reported The Daily Post (12 February, p12).

The Labour MP who last month quit the government, suggested he might hit the election trail if the job was expanded to cover the whole of Merseyside. He raised the idea of a New York-style mayor with county-wide powers over Liverpool, Sefton and the other three Merseyside boroughs.

But he stressed that he didn't want to go back to the now-defunct Merseyside CC. He said: 'We need to redefine what the city is' and called for a fresh look at the whole elected mayor idea being pushed by the government.

He said his comments were 'one first step' in starting a fundamental debate on the issue.
