The Kincardine Bridge - one of Scotland's engineering masterpieces - looks likely to receive a stay of execution according to a confidential report for the Scottish Office obtained by The Scotsman (p1).

The bridge, which spans for Forth estuary, is due to be replaced by a new structure in the year 2000, but the report from consultants recommends that traffic would be best served by two bridges.

Giving the Kincardine bridge a £12m upgrade as part of the proposal would be cheaper than the current plans which have attracted great interest from environmentalists, reports The Scotsman.
