Kingston LBC has written to Education secretary Gillian Shepherd demanding action to help the growing number of children unable to attend schools near their home, the Evening Standard reports (p3).

The move follows a court ruling which allows children to be given places in the schools of their choice, irrespective of borough boundaries.

Now the best schools have been swamped, causing many locals to be excluded, the paper reports.
