Kingston Communications, Britain's only council-owned telephone company, has outlined plans to offer residential phone services outside its home city of Hull for the first time in its history, according to The Northern Echo (2 Oct, p13).

The company is planning to operate across east Yorkshire and has already started laying cables. The move follows a July agreement with Oftel allowing Kingston to operate outside Hull in return for allowing BT to operate in the city.

A spokesman said: 'There has been a pent-up demand for our services in the areas outside Hull for the past 96 years almost. People have always been keen to have our services.'
