Kirklees council has banned smacking in a new campaign against the physical punishment of children, reports The Yorkshire Post (p9).

Council chiefs want to educate parents by involving educationists, foster parents, carers and social workers.

Social services committee chair Gary Dimmock said: 'We aren't Big Brother watching parents' every move and we continue to believe people want to be good parents but sometimes reach the end of their tethers and resort to smacking their children and it's our responsibility as a council to help them in every way we can.'
