Brian Mawhinney, the Tory party chairman, has forecast that Labour's plans for assemblies for English regional chambers will cost the tax payer £108m a year reports The Independent (p6)

Tory Central Office estimates that a Scottish Parliament would cost about £50m a year, with annual running costs of £43m. The annual cost of the Welsh assembly is put at £34m, with running costs of £29m a year. Labour's nine regional chambers are estimated to cost £19m.

Dr Mawhinney said that if the assemblies went ahead: 'Britain would be reduced to a collection of squabbling, inward looking principalities.'

The Tories have mounted a poster campaign hiring sites throughout the UK.
