The Observer analysed the declining fortunes of the Labour party in Sheffield and Liverpool under the headline 'Labour cities run into the buffers' (pgs 20&21).
It refers to a leaked memo from Labour's HQ which warns that the party's control in Sheffield could be under threat in the coming local elections.
News that the Labour-led council is putting up pensioners' concessionary fares to cover the crippling debts of the supertram system have delighted the Liberal Democrat opposition, it says.
The Liberal Democrats stand to take control in Liverpool, the Observer predicts, but the Labour party is also bracing itself for bad results in Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield and inner London.
