In the wake of a leaked cabinet paper casting doubt on claims that single teenagers are getting pregnant to jump the housing queue, the shadow environment secretary, Jack Straw, has called for the backing of housing minister, Sir George Young.

In an open letter, Mr Straw calls for any evidence to be made public as part of a review of homelessness legislation. 'I understand that last night, the Secretary of State for social security, Mr Peter Liley, when interviewed on television replied 'who knows?' when asked for his estimate of the number of such alleged queue jumpers,' wrote Mr Straw.

Sir George's attack on single parents at the party conference was an attempt to cover up the Government's disastrous housing policy, he said.
