Labour councillors are campaigning to abolish grammar schools 'by the back door, against the wishes of Tony Blair, the Sunday Times reported (p1).

They intend to exploit Blair's pledge to allow parents a 'free vote' on whether local grammars should be replaced by comprehensives, hoping to appeal to the majority of parents whose children fail to gain grammar school places.

In Kent, the Labour group's local election manifesto says it wants to 'end 11-plus selection and provide high quality comprehensive education for all pupils'.
