Labour council leaders are quietly preparing to abolish the country's remaining grammar schools, the Sunday Times said (19 January, page 5).

Graham Lane, chairman of the Association of Metropolitan Authorities, said councils would return to full comprehensive education under a Labour government.

The move would contradict Tony Blair's pledge to allow local parents to vote on whether to keep selective state schools.
