The government has misled parliament over its improvements to public services by overstating the number of targets it has achieved, a memorandum from a cabinet minister has revealed, reports The Sunday Times (p8). In January, Paul Boateng, chief secretary to the Treasury, told MPs the government had missed only one in eight, (13%), of its targets for improving key services including schools and the police. However, in a memo submitted to the commons public administration committee, he has now admitted that the government has missed or been unable to evaluate more than a third of the targets.
