Professor Michael Barber, head of Labour's literacy taskforce, is to start work on the new Labour government's education white paper, expected in June.

Reported in the Independent (5 May, p6), he said the paper would include policies for new legislation such as to abolish grant-maintained schools, and would also cover broader aims.

Labour's School Improvement Strategy will require LEAs to submit education development plans to the Department of Education and Employment.
