The prime minister is to make a full-fronted attack on Ken Livingstone after Labour's selection panel meets tomorrow to decide its shortlist for the party's candidate for election as mayor of London, reports The Guardian (p2).

After months of indecision over which tactics to adopt to block Mr Livingstone, it is suggested that he will be allowed on to the shortlist but will then face a withering assault.

In an interview with Sky Television before leaving the Commonwealth conference in South Africa, Mr Blair said he would save his comments until after the selection panel had met.

But he gave a hint of his thinking: 'The Labour Party has come a long way since the early 1980s and I will never, ever let the party go back to those days - not while I'm in charge,' he said.

A Labour source said of Mr Livingstone: 'the tactics are to let him run and then blast him. It is no use pussyfooting around.'
