Commenting on Stephen Byers' department bailing out Hackney by£25m

of central government funding*, shadow secretary of state for

transport, local government & the regions, Theresa May, said:

'Labour-run Hackney has been failing local people for years, and it is

disgraceful that Stephen Byers is now trying to bail them out with£25m

of taxpayers' money. Why should we all have to pick up the bill for

the incompetence and failure of Labour councillors?

'Like Railtrack, Stephen Byers has meddled and interfered in Hackney

constantly, but the public are still being let down'.
