The Sun (June 24, p2) reported that Labour peer Lord Toby Harris of

Haringey, claimed£88 for a 20-mile round-trip to Wembley Stadium and also for trips to Labour Party headquarters.

The story follows a Sun report last week which claimed that Lord Harris had an expenses bill of£289 a week for taxi journeys. The paper says that journeys like the£88 trip to Wembley (which could have cost£4.10 on the Underground) account for the allegedly high expenses.

Haringey LBC Conservative leader Peter Forrest told the paper: 'It's just not on. He is using this as a private taxi service.'

Lord Harris told the Sun: 'The meetings at Wembley will almost certainly be in connection with my role as the local government authority nominee with the National Stadium Trust.'

In a letter to Haringey LBC's chief executive David Warwick, Lord Harris said using taxis had been agreed in advance because it allowed him to work and use a phone while travelling to and from meetings.
