The Labour party is studying a plan to encourage public sector employees to trade large pay rises for long term guarantees that they would not be made redundant, reports the Daily Telegraph (p1).

The idea, aimed at offering job security, will be discussed with unions and employers and could potentially be extended to the private sector.

Labour employment spokesman Peter Hain is thought to be the champion of the plan, which is also understood to have the support of shadow employment and education secretary David Blunkett, says the paper.
