The Labour party has said it would take action if it emerged that anyone had acted in a way that was 'inconsistent with representing the party' in a report criticising Doncaster MBC councillors over alleged junkets.

The Times (p9) reports that according to the district auditor for Doncaster, councillors went on drinking binges running up huge bills with one meal for two costing£284 and working lunches at£50 a head.

The auditor Gordon Sutton said: 'The level of alcohol consumed at these lunches makes it unlikely that those attending could do any work in the afternoon, let alone stand up.'

Andrew Sharpe, Labour's regional secretary told Radio 4's The World At One, yesterday that the council policy committee had accepted the report and its recommendations.

He added: 'Our national officers will be considering the report. Once we have gone through it, we shall then be recommending action to be taken in relation to these councillors involved.'
