Labour education spokesman David Blunkett has written to education secretary Gillian Shephard demanding she resist pressure to introduce vouchers for nursery education, reported The Guardian (18 March, p4).

Mr Blunkett said vouchers were either an unnecessary administrative burden or the precursor to charging for pre-school places.

The exchange of letters with Ms Shephard followed John Major's statement in the Commons on Thursday that the government is not considering vouchers for school-age children, despite pressure by a rightwing Tory think-tank.
