An internal Labour party briefing for parliamentary candidates warns them not to expect a landslide victory, reported the Sunday Times (p2).

The message is reinforced by a survey of local authority by-elections conducted by the Local Government Chronicle Elections Centre at Plymouth University.

This suggests that Labour's 'real' lead over the Conservative party is 16 points, against an opinion poll average of 28 points.

The survey concludes that Labour's fortunes are levelling out, with a corresponding increase in those of the Tories.
