A North Lanarkshire Council member has been suspended by the Labour Party after he was found guilty of drunkenly forcing his way into the home of an MSP after an argument at a Christmas party.

The Herald (p3) reports that James McKinlay was fined£600 at Airdrie sheriff court after admitting breaching the peace at the home of Labour MSP Elaine Smith on 23 December last year.

A Labour spokesman confirmed the party whip had been withdrawn from Mr McKinlay pending a full investigation.
