Two local authorities are claiming that they have received a pat on the back from their district auditors today.

Lambeth LBC says that a DA management letter for the year 1994/1995 notes many recent achievements, and says: 'in some instances Lambeth is at the forefront of good practice.'

The auditor, Paul Claydon, who is soon to move to another area, says he is pleased the council has established an audit committee, strengthened senior management, and notes that despite the lack of overall control by any one political party detects: 'a genuine commitment to securing beneficial change has become apparent'

Mr Claydon recommends that the council should not embark on further investigations of alleged past fraud 'unless new evidence is available which clearly justified formal action.'

Sheffield City Council says the district auditor for their area, Gordon Sutton, in his 1994/95 review of the council's performance, says the council has the best record of any major city in collecting the poll tax, and that it exceeds many of the standards set by the Audit Commission for collecting council tax.
