Lambeth LBC has been told to pay£500 to a motorist who was unfairly fined for illegal parking after he proved that the bay his car was parked in was too small.

The Daily Mail (p28) reports that John Letts was fined£30 by a traffic inspector because the tyres of his Saab car overlapped the white line. But Mr Letts measured the bay and found it was only 174cm wide, when the legal minimum is 180m.

An appeals tribunal ruled last month that Lambeth had presented 'misleading' evidence and was 'wholly unreasonable' not to overturn the fine.

Lambeth is to challenge the adjudicator's decision to award Mr Letts£500.
