Lambeth LBC councillor Ty Goddard struck out in The Guardian letter's page (Jan 16, p20) against columnist Jeremy Hardy's mocking of the council.

'Our borough needs to stop wasting money on more than 2,500 empty classroom places. We need to provide new school buildings. We need excellence - and we aim to drive up standards in every primary school,' writes Cllr Goddard.

'We, at least, are honest about the legacy we inherited. We could not have consulted more thoroughly. We've taken our message into the heart of the community ... We have communicated directly with parents - something no previous Lambeth council has done.

'Jeremy Hardy should stop using his column to excuse the behaviour of the Socialist Workers Party. Their latest stunt involved breaking down doors, stealing council equipment and disrupting an education committee meeting as a parent was speaking.

'Lambeth children and parents deserve much more than slogans and empty

posturing when it comes to the future of education.'
