Lambeth's tactics to stamp out kerb crawlers in Streatham have been criticised for being too dangerous by the emergency services, reports the London Evening Standard (p17)

Streatham has been plagued by prostitutes for years, and Lambeth had already bought a number of street barriers to keep away kerb crawlers.

The barriers, if fitted, could be lifted by residents using smart cards. But the emergency services and the police are concerned that the barriers could be dangerous and that they were 'too extreme a measure' for the problem.

Some residents' groups support the police on the matter, describing the barriers as 'something out of Belfast', while others still support the scheme.

The council's environment committee meets tonight to discuss the issue.
