The introduction of the landfill tax has seen some local authorities commissioning dedicated composting plants, committing themselves to varying degrees of centralised sorting and processing.

The Organic Resource Agency has been launched to harness what the Financial Times describes (p35) as a growing interest in separation of materials at source and then composting on-farm.

The company will aim to promote long term contracts for organic municipal waste, among both organic and conventional farms.
