Following investigations of a complaint against Lochaber District Council, Ian Lang, Scottish Secretary, today instructed the council to retender its leisure services management contract. The new contract must commence by November 1, 1994 at the latest.

The Secretary of State issued his Direction after a complaint by a private contractor. The firm concerned allege that the council acted unfairly in awarding its leisure services management contract to its own in-house service, despite the private firm quoting a lower price.

Allan Stewart, Minister for Local Government at The Scottish Office, said: 'The public is entitled to value for money from the services they pay local authorities to provide. The Secretary of State's action makes it clear that we will not tolerate private firms being frozen out of local authority contracts.
