Jarrow Labour MP Stephen Hepburn is to resign as a South Tyneside BC councillor at the local elections in May with a year of his term to run.

He resigned as deputy leader after the general election, but resisted calls to leave the council, where he has served for more than a decade, altogether.

The Journal (15 Jan, p12) reports that Mr Hepburn is the last of four North East councillors who became MPs last May to give up his council seat.
