Plymouth University's survey of local byelection in the last three months of 1995 shows an average Labour lead of 16 points, reports The Guardian (p6).

An ICM poll for the paper today finds an increase in support for the Liberal Democrats at the expense of the Tories.

The Conservatives are down from 31% to 26% with the Lib Dems up from 16 to 22. Labour is unchanged at 48%.
