Generally the indicators show that service provision, and the costs of such provision, can vary widely even when comparing authorities that are apparently similar. They provide a useful tool for examining the priorities of authorities and the efficiency with which services are delivered, though they need to be interpreted in the context of local needs.
Some of the reported range of indicator values between local authorities are shown below:
- total personal social services gross expenditure per capita for
1997-98 varied from£125 to£500;
- the percentage of children looked after in foster placements varied
between 47% and 86% in 1997-98.
1. The Key Indicators Graphical System contains information from 1990-91 to 1998-99 for all local authorities in England, with about 250 indicators formed each year based on data collected by central government departments. They were originally developed for the Social Services Inspectorate and local authorities to compare social services provision and can be useful to anyone looking at social services performance issues.
