The Society of Purchasing Officers will hold its inaugural conference in London tomorrow following the merger of two previous assoications representing officers at county and metropolitan authorities.

Speakers lined up for the day will give presentations on best value, CCT and best practice in purchasing. Speakers include Local Government Association chief executive Brian Briscoe.

Membership in the new society is open to the most senior purchasing officer in any local authority in England and Wales, as well as police, fire and transport authorities. The society's aim is to act as an adviser to the Local Government Association on all procurement and supplies matters.
