Fife Council deputy leader Christine May is the favourite to be elected leader to succeed Alex Rowley, who has been appointed general secretary of the Scottish Labour party, reports The Scotsman (p6).

Rival candidates include Tom Dair, who was a vice-convener and education chairman of the former Fife RC, and John Simpson, former leader of Dunfermline DC.

According to Labour group insiders, the outcome of the leadership contest will depend on whether or not it wished to continue the radical agenda for change set by Mr Rowley.
