Two local authorities, Caradon DC and Dumfries and Galloway Council, have banned sunbeds from leisure centres on health grounds, reports The Independent (p3).

A leading consultant dermatologist, Jonathan Norris of Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary, in a letter to the British Medical Journal, yesterday urged colleagues nationally to put pressure on councils to remove sunbeds.

'Councils may argue that they are catering for a demand for sunbeds by the public, but this demand is led by ignorance and should be rejected,' he said.

The Independent reports that skin cancer is increasing by about 10% a year, with around 40,000 new cases diagnosed annually.
