Thirteen local education authorities have asked the government for additional funding for private finance initiative projects over their original estimates.

The LEAs involved are Birmingham City Council, Cornwall CC, Dorset CC, Dudley MBC, Kingston upon Hull City, Leeds City, Manchester City, North Yorkshire CC, Sheffield City, Staffordshire CC, City of Stoke on Trent, Tower Hamlets LBC and Westminster City Council.

Education minister Charles Clarke said: 'Many of these projects are very early pathfinders and the original estimates of costs were based on limited information.

'In all cases, local education authorities have been required to demonstrate that the projects continue to provide value for money at the increased level of funding. The initial assessment of PFI project costs has improved as experience of schools PFI has been gained.'
