The manager of a local authority education benefits and awards department reveals how fraudsters are making £30m a year through bogus grant applications.
Writing in the Guardian Education supplement (p4), Adrian Beeby said that over the past four years fraudulent applications for student grants across London boroughs have increased five-fold.
Similar patterns have been emerging in the West Midlands and the Manchester area.
'With resources in education so scarce, perhaps the authorities' failure to stem its loss is the biggest crime of all,' he concludes.
