Leeds City Council has defended its decision to place twins for adoption with a convicted prostitute, who later killed one of them (Yorkshire Post p1).
Angela Harris was convicted of prostitution 19 years ago, and the council said it believed Ms Smith 'had matured into a responsible adult capable of caring for two young children'.
Three months after the twins were placed with her and her husband, she shook one of two-year-old twins to death. The little boy also had multiple body injuries in addition to the brain haemorrhaging which resulted from the shaking.
Mike Evans, Leeds' assistant director of social services, told the Yorkshire Post: 'When these things happen one always wants to look back and say 'would we or should we have done anything differently?'. In this case I don't think we would. There is nothing to suggest that the assessment was flawed.'
