George Mudie, the Leeds East MP who has been accused of political interference in the education authority, is positioning himself to run for the city's elected mayor, according to The Yorkshire Post (12 February, p3).

But the 1980s council leader denied he had any plans at present, saying: 'The job does not exist.'

But he added: 'I will consider it when the legisaltion and the referendum have gone through.'

Progress on the government Bill through parliament was considered by the council's executive board this week and one member said: 'The corridors of city hall are rife with rumours. He would be a huge embarrassment to the city - he still pulls strings and always has done.'
