A member of the Greater London Labour Party executive has privately welcomed the idea of an elected mayor because the Labour Party in London is well to the left of Mr Blair.

He said the left is confident it can install a candidate similar to Ken Livingstone, who as leader of the Greater London Council was renowned for being a focus of opposition to Neil Kinnock. Key London figures intend to use any mayoral election to launch a resurgence of the left, he said.
