Members of Leicester City Council have voted for a 600% rise in their basic allowance when they take on unitary status next year.

The authority has voted to increase the basic allowance from £660 to £4,000 but will abolish almost all attendance allowances.

Members of the main committees will be able to claim a special responsibility allowance of £4,000. This will give a total payment of £8,000, roughly double the previous rate for a similar job.

The overall budget is being increased from £130,000 to £340,000.

Assistant town clerk Roger Nielsen said the increase would have been higher if the council had followed guidance issued by the local authority associations and that the new rate was comparable with other unitaries.

-- Lewisham LBC has reduced its attendance allowances and increased its basic allowance from £759 to £1,500. Its overall budget will remain unchanged at £209,000.
