Leicester City Council has received the first part of a£1.28m EU grant which will help fund an information technology project in the city, reports The Leicester Mercury.

The Electronic Services for a Better Quality of Life (EQUAL) project has the aim of improving public access to information via a wide range of electronic media across Europe.

The project, which started in January, focuses on traffic and transportation, education and distance learning and libraries and information. Staff are looking at the use of electronic media in improving people's access to information tailored to their needs.
