Leicester City Council is today expected to approve a proposal to close six schools which have been condemned by Ofsted as having serious weaknesses or failing to give an acceptable standard of education, reports the Daily Telegraph (p2).

The council, which is effectively pioneering the government's threat to shut down failing schools and re-open them under new management, plans to set up a 'super school' with 2,000 pupils.

The plan, if approved, will come into effect in Spetember next year.
