Two Leicestershire schools have agreed to link-up with schools in the South African township of Soweto. It is hoped that a formal twinning arrangement between the city council and Soweto will be arranged, reports BBC Leicester.
The aim is to help the education and development of people in both countries.
An independent organisation, Leicester Soweto Bridge, has been established. It has been in contact with head teachers in Soweto to further ties. Desford County Primary School and Bosworth Community College have agreed to form links with Soweto schools. They hope to do this by computer discs. Schools in the county and Soweto Bridge have agreed to help raise funds so that Soweto schools can buy the appropriate equipment.
A member of the group will visit South Africa later this year to make personal contact with schools there. The representative is also hoping to visit community housing projects and other community groups to develop links between these organisations and similar groups in Leicester.
