In her excellent article on the rise of modern managers (LGC, 11 March), Suzanne-Simmons-Lewis quotes Rodney Brooke as saying: 'Before 1974 all town clerks used to be lawyers.' Not so. My first town clerk, Peter Coomber, was an accountant and had been appointed by Ealing LBC in 1969.
