Chris Waterman is right that the draft code of practice on admissions will cause further inequality in the education system (LGC, 19 January).

Stephen Byers seems to believe that the proposed changes will improve the lot of disadvantaged children. This will not happen.

Unless the admissions code is statutory, schools may be tempted act in their own best interests rather than the child's.

Who won the debate? Mr Waterman is the voice of common sense and gets my vote.
